The Rome Less Traveled
Yes, Rome is full of ancient history and there is probably an endless list of the things you have to see when you visit. This is not that list.These are the places I recommend that are a little less traveled because once you've seen all the things you must see, there's still so much more to Rome.
The Key Hole: On Aventine Hill, you peer through the key hole into a garden allowing a perfect view of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. The keyhole leads to the property of the Knights of Malta and was once possessed by the Knights Templar (basically if you're a Dan Brown nerd like I am, this is so cool). The Knights of Malta are one of the only remaining orders of knights, dating back to the crusades. So while standing in Italy, you can look over the independent territory of Malta to the Vatican City...3 countries in one spot. Crazy cool.
The Illusion of Rome in the Garden of Oranges: Beside the Keyhole on Aventine Hill is the Parco Savello Giardino degli Aranci or the Garden of Oranges. It is named one of the most romantic gardens in Rome. Orange trees line the walkways and the ledge offers an outstanding panoramic view of the city. Also, the park is known for offering an illusion of Rome-- when you enter the park, you can see St. Peter's Basilica across the garden, seemingly much closer than it realistically is, as you approach the edge of the park to overlook the balcony, the Basilica shrinks back down against the city skyline as it should be.
Trastevere: charming Roman neighborhood with cobblestone streets that is somewhat of an escape from the heavy tourist areas. Live music and classic Italian character can be found while wandering the winding roads.
Walk along the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica): ancient Roman road or highway from 5th century BC, the phrase "all roads lead to Rome" derives from this passageway that once spanned 330 miles. It is believed this is the walk where Jesus Christ appeared to Peter.
