SAIL AWAY TO NEVERLAND : PETER PAN & MBNA THAMES CLIPPERS
What is more London of a show than Peter Pan?! I can't think of one! And the National Theatre has it playing from now until February 4th. In their feel good and wholesome adaption, I couldn't help but get the GIRL POWER vibes! With Wendy Darling as the headstrong lead and even the antagonist Captain Hook played by a female, the gender roles that are typically so narrow in most childhood stories are finally freed. Why should the main heroes, and even villains, always be masculine? Can't a girl be whatever she wants to be? And in director Sally Cookson's own words, "this provides the emotional essence of the story. If Hook is a man you don’t get that ‘mother figure’ theme running through the story, which is hugely important to the piece." The other aspect I love about this take on the classic is that despite the magical and fairytale story of Peter Pan, this one shows you the secret behind it all. The flying is so creatively mastered through a series of ladders and weights that I was just as impressed by the exposed behind the scenes! Also, I cannot forget to mention the music behind the show. The upbeat reggae tunes of the lost boys will follow you home! I was humming the song for days..We arrived at the National Theatre in the best fashion...by water! The MBNA Thames Clippers offers service to Waterloo every twenty minutes with breathtaking views of London and a bar serving coffees and adult beverages for the ride!
